SYMPOSIUM HBBTV: NOVA AND PRIMA HAVE SHOWN WHAT THEY ARE ATTRACTING VIEWERS WITH UNDER THE RED BUTTON

9. 11. 2022
The tenth anniversary edition of the international conference HbbTV Symposium and Awards 2022 started on Wednesday 9th November in Prague. The morning session was dedicated to the partners of the event from the Czech Republic under the banner of the AKTV. HbbTV has already become an absolutely common part of the distribution mix for media groups Nova and Prima, enabling them to connect linear broadcasting and the online world.

Tereza Šimečková, head of the research company Nielsen Admosphere, stated on the basis of the presented research that 92% of households have a TV set, while 49% of them are connected to the internet. HbbTV technology, the so-called virtual red button, is active on 23% of these TVs. There are currently around one million active HbbTV users in the Czech Republic. Almost 770 thousand viewers consume content via video libraries or TV archives.

The results presented by Nielsen Admosphere also showed that the higher the age of the viewer, the higher the share of live TV viewing. In the 65+ group, this option is already significantly dominant and the possibility of using a second screen, such as a mobile phone, is almost zero. By contrast, it is highest among viewers aged 15 to 24. Live TV viewing continues to dominate in all age groups, with HbbTV making up a minority share for now.

Iva Dohnálková from the media group Nova presented the red button activities to the participants of the HbbTV Symposium conference. They are developing the technology with their partner, the operator České Radiokomunikace. Dohnálková presented, among other things, the possibilities of HbbTV for advertisers and linking the technology to linear broadcasting. Nova has significantly connected the world of the red button with the Voyo video library, which it promotes through special tiles, currently including Cases of Extraordinary Marty. It also has special offers ready for advertisers.

Dohnálková also showed the attendees the possibilities of engaging the so-called SVOD and AVOD services. SVOD, or paid video library, is just Voyo, where both original titles of the Nova Group, including exclusive premieres, as well as acquisition films and series are available. AVOD, or ad-supported video service, is Nova Plus, the media group's free archive with a limited number of titles and time availability supplemented by advertising. In the latest news, Nova on Tuesday introduced the involvement of quiz apps. The feature allows viewers to quiz viewers in a linear layer during the broadcast on a variety of questions.

At the HbbTV Symposium and Awards conference, FTV Prima presented all the activities it is implementing in the virtual red button environment, whether it is a combination of free and paid content on the iPrima online platform, as well as eSports broadcasts, which are very popular here. HbbTV manager Kateřina Srbová presented in detail the Prima Shopping project, formerly known as Prima Flyers. The media group is also going to integrate its new video library into the HbbTV environment, which it plans to launch by the end of the year.
