23. 9. 2022
IPA TouchPoints offers great insights into today’s media consumption. The data is drawn from a representative sample of over 6,000 adults aged 15+ living in Great Britain. Each person keeps a diary via their mobile phone, detailing their activities every half an hour for a week.

This month’s Chart of the Month uses TouchPoints to break down the UK’s media usage into its different general forms, namely watching, listening, reading, gaming, and communicating.

The data shows that the average person’s daily media time is 12 hours, 16 minutes, although some of this time is duplicated across media as individuals may consume more than one medium in any given half hour. Of these media minutes, just over a third (37%) is spent ‘watching’, with ‘communicating’ – i.e. messaging, using social media, and emailing – the second largest use of media, accounting for 30%.

According to IPA TouchPoints, we spend 4 hours, 31 minutes ‘watching’ media. Linear TV accounts for two thirds of this, SVOD accounts for 18%, online video has 8%, and BVOD 7%. The remaining share is accounted for by Cinema and DVD.
