THE SHARE OF SMART TVS IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC TRIPLED IN FOUR YEARS

The share of smart TVs connected to the internet has tripled over the last four years. At present, they are used by more than a third of Czech households, shows Philips statistics.

The share of smart TVs connected to the internet has tripled over the last four years and they are used by more than a third of Czech households at present. The number of subscribers to streaming services such as Netflix or HBO Go has increased from three to ten percent of Czechs since 2019. The growth is driven by the transition to DVB-T2 and the expansion of streaming offer.

The coronavirus pandemic has played its role, bringing the Czechs back to TV screens. This is the outcome of the statistics of Philips’s local agency available to ČTK.
More than 93 percent of households use an application in their smart TVs with the Android TV platform at least once a month. For smart TVs with other platforms, the share is about 78 percent of users. One of the reasons may be the limited offer of applications in manufacturers’ walled gardens and their slow updates.

The most used application in smart TVs is the video network YouTube. It is followed by Netflix used to access streaming content on the internet. Rakuten TV placed third followed by HBO Go, Voyo.cz and Amazon Prime Video.
“Over the last year, people started using much more of the potential of their smart TVs at home. They have installed new applications and tested VOD services. We have seen higher demand for TVs with Android TV,”

said the director of Philips TV & Sound for the Czech Republic Petr Valoušek.

Compared to other European states, the difference between the Eastern and Western European countries is apparent. Except for Austria, using the Netflix streaming service application dominates Western Europe while Eastern European households prefer watching videos on YouTube. Netflix placed second in their smart TVs.
