Domestic productions remain the main driver of the television market. Czech and Czechoslovak content accounts for just a third of the programming on offer, yet it accounts for 57 per cent of total viewing figures, according to Atmedia.

Czech viewers continue to prefer domestic television productions. Last year, Czech and Czechoslovak content accounted for 57% of total television viewership, even though it made up only 31% of the programming offered by the measured television stations. This is according to data from Atmedia.

Viewers aged 15 and over watched television for an average of three and a half hours a day, and two-thirds of the population tuned in every day.

“Local content remains one of the main reasons why viewers switch on the television, and even in an era of growing media fragmentation, it continues to demonstrate its ability to reach a wide audience,” said Michaela Suráková, Managing Director of Atmedia.

Czech content enjoys a strong position across all generations. Among viewers aged 15 to 34, it accounts for half of the time spent watching television; for the 35 to 54 age group, the figure is 55 per cent; and for the oldest viewers, 59 per cent.

Moreover, the share of domestic production in television broadcasting has been growing steadily over the long term. Whilst it accounted for a fifth of the offering in 2015, last year it reached 31 per cent. According to Atmedia, this trend is evident not only among major television stations but also among pay-TV thematic channels. Examples include FilmBox and CS Film. According to Atmedia, FilmBox has long been the most-watched pay-TV station on the Czech market, reaching around one million viewers aged 18 to 69 every month.

“Viewers have long shown great interest in Czech content, even on pay-TV thematic channels,” added Suráková.
