The popular streaming service wants to capture interest in watching videos on mobile phones. It plans to introduce vertical videos to the American audience this year. It presented its plans last week at CES 2026 in Las Vegas.
According to The Walt Disney Company, the vertical video channel with short videos is intended to make Disney+ a "daily destination" for users on mobile devices. The company said that the broadcasting experience will evolve as the news and entertainment industry expands and as this content is personalised and adapted to viewer behaviour."We want to bring the best of what makes our live broadcast stations great, from ESPN to ABC News to Hulu Plus Live TV, into a unified environment," BroadbandTVnews.com quoted Erin Teague, executive vice president of product management at The Walt Disney Company,as saying.
"We are also considering experiences designed primarily for mobile devices. We know that mobile devices are an incredible opportunity to turn Disney+ into a true everyday destination for fans, so that's exactly what we're going to do," Teague added. Vertical videos on Disney+ will feature a combination of original short-form content, edited clips from social media, and scenes edited from longer programmes and films. This new content is expected to appear on the US market at the end of this year. Disney is following in the footsteps of its sister sports channel ESPN, which added a "Verts" tab with personalised short videos to its app last August.
Short vertical videos could encourage Disney+ app users to watch entire episodes of series, films and live broadcasts. The company announced this news at a meeting focused on advertisers, so it can be expected that this new channel will also become another advertising medium over time.
