The number of people watching paid online videos in the Czech Republic has increased by more than a third in a year, new data from the czech statistical office shows.

Shows on pay-per-view internet video channels (SVOD) such as Netflix and HBO Max were watched by 22% of people aged 16 and over in the Czech Republic this year, up 7 percentage points from a year earlier. In absolute terms, this represents 1.9 million people (+35% year-on-year), according to new data from the Czech Statistical Office (CSO).

The CSO notes that large year-on-year increases in the popularity of these channels have also occurred in previous years, with viewership up five percentage points between 2020 and 2021 and 7pc a year earlier. The highest proportion of people watching pay-per-view videos is in the 25-34 age group, at 40%, followed by 16-24 year olds at 38%. Among people of different educational backgrounds, a high proportion, namely 37%, was recorded for those with a university education. Persons with less education watched paid channels significantly less.

If freely available videos, such as YouTube, are also taken into account, their viewership in the Czech 16+ population is higher than 5 million (5.157 million persons). According to the CSO, 60% of people over 16 years of age are watching videos, and even here the number of viewers is increasing every year. Internet TV viewing (e.g. iBroadcast of Czech Television, Stream, DVTV) accounts for 3.235 million people.

More and more households are using internet-connected TV, with the share rising from 34% to 44% in the last two years.

According to the CSO, reading news sites is one of the most frequent online activities ever. Current news is read online by 78% of the Czech population aged 16 or over. Of those who use the internet, this figure is as high as 92%. Although 9 out of 10 internet users read news online, almost all of them read articles exclusively on freely available news servers. Only 3.5% of Czechs aged 16 and over read articles on fee-based sites in the 3 months prior to the survey. Most of them were among 25-34 year olds (6%).
