A SIGNIFICANT MAJORITY OF CZECHS WATCH SERIES ON THE INTERNET IN CZECH

Up to 75% of the Czech online population prefers to watch series in Czech on the internet, while only 16% prefer to watch them with Czech subtitles, according to new data from Nielsen Admosphere's Video on the Internet study.

Three quarters of internet users still prefer to watch series in Czech or Slovak (including dubbed ones), which is still the vast majority. Moreover, the popularity of series in the Czech version increases significantly with age: in the youngest group of respondents (15-24 years old), "only" 42% of respondents prefer them, while 77% of those in the middle working age group (35-44 years old) and even 90% of those over 55 years old. The data is based on the current freely accesible Nielsen Admosphere Video on the Internet 2022 study, which already captures the more than 10-year trend of online video content viewing in the Czech Republic.

Series with Czech subtitles prefer 16% of respondents. Their popularity, on the other hand, decreases with age - they are most popular among the youngest group (30%), while only 7% of people 55+ prefer them. Watching series with English subtitles (5%) or in English without subtitles (3%) is the least popular. Again, both methods lead among the youngest age groups: 15% of 15-24 year olds prefer series with English subtitles and 11% in English without subtitles.

News videos are currently the most watched type of online video in our country, with more than a third of the internet population watching them at least a few times a week. Second and third place goes to series and movies. Serials are mostly watched in the Czech version.

News videos are consumed the most (37%) at least several times a week. The researchers add that the high share of news videos may also be influenced by the interest in the topic of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which was filling the news media at the time of the survey (March/April). Series are currently a very close second and have also been expanding at a rapid pace in recent years: 36% of online respondents watch them several times a week or more. Films, which are the third most watched type of online video content, are watched at this frequency by 34% of respondents. Funny videos and music videos rank fourth and fifth (31% and 28% respectively).

The current year's survey was conducted in spring 2022 using an online collection method on a sample of 1,000 respondents from the Czech National Panel's internet population over the age of 15.
