The Czech Statistical Office report declares, that the video viewing on internet is increasing in the Czech Republic. About 1.4 million people over the age of 16 watch videos on paid sites.

According to annual data from the Czech Statistical Office (CSO), videos on the internet were watched by an average of 5.5 million people aged 16 and over in 2021, representing 63 % of the Czech population of this age. The vast majority (roughly 5 million people) watched free videos (YouTube, Facebook or other sharing platforms). More than 15 % of the population over 16 watched videos on paid sites like Netflix or HBO Go, which is 1.4 million people. The data comes from the CSO's full-year report, The Information Society in Numbers, which was published on Tuesday.

According to this data, internet video viewing has increased by 25% since 2019, but the increase in paid video is fivefold in that time frame. The covid-19 pandemic has contributed to the growth in paid video, however the proportion of people paying for videos online is relatively low compared to other European countries. It is highest in Sweden, the Netherlands and Denmark, where it is up to 70 %.

The charts below show that the most frequent users of internet videos (paid and unpaid) are people aged 16 – 44.  However, the report does not provide numbers of users of individual paid services or video sharing platforms.

The report also notes that 83 % of people in the Czech Republic used the internet in 2021, and 72 % accessed it via mobile phone. The most common online activities include reading news, using online banking or shopping.

In the case of online shopping, the rate of growth slowed last year after a significant increase in the number of people shopping online between 2019 and 2020. Even so, more people shopped online in 2021 than in the previous year. This included 5 million people over the age of 16, who made up 57 % of this population. Clothing and footwear have long been among the most frequently purchased commodities, with almost 40 % of over-16s buying online, while items such as electronics, groceries and drugstores are not negligible. There has been a significant year-on-year increase in online food ordering from restaurants. In 2021, one fifth ordered food from a restaurant online.
