PRIMA IS APPLYING FOR A LICENCE FOR A NEW THEMATIC CHANNEL. WILL IT BE A SPORTS CHANNEL?

FTV Prima has submitted an application to the Council for Radio and Television Broadcasting for licences for a new television channel. However, it has not yet publicly disclosed the channel’s focus.

The Prima Group has asked the Council for Radio and Television Broadcasting (RRTV) to issue licences for its new television channel. However, FTV Prima has not yet revealed the name of the new channel in its application, referring to it only with a question mark. The application uses the name Prima ?, as it does not wish to reveal the nature of the project. This is not the first time Prima has used this form of registration.

Although the application dates from 19 May, it only appeared in the regulator’s online database today, Thursday 11 June. The application covers both terrestrial DVB-T2 broadcasting and internet broadcasting. Prima has so far declined to comment on the project. “We will not specify what the licence application concerns at this stage,” said spokesperson Blanka Bumbálková in response to a query from MediaGuru.cz.

According to unofficial information from MediaGuru.cz, it could be a sports-focused thematic channel. Prima has long sought to launch a sports channel and has also shown interest in certain attractive broadcasting rights. According to our information, the channel would likely not be built from scratch. One possibility is a link-up with the Sporty TV project, which already broadcasts nationwide via DVB-T2. Part of the existing sports channel’s team could thus move to FTV Prima. The launch of the new thematic channel could take place in the coming weeks, and Prima could announce it at its regular press conference on the autumn schedule, which usually takes place in the middle of the summer holidays.

Prima had already planned to expand its portfolio of thematic channels two years ago, but plans to launch the new channels Prima Case and Prima Port ultimately fell through. Regarding the possible launch of a sports channel, the then-CEO Marek Singer merely stated that “its potential creation is contingent upon a partnership that we would manage to negotiate,” he said in an interview for our website two years ago.
