REFLEX’S PICK: THIS YEAR’S CHRISTMAS ADS, WHICH ARE A TRULY BIZARRE SPECTACLE!

24. 12. 202224. 12. 2022
Christmas commercials have somehow become part of our Christmas experience. From the time I was a little boy, Santa relied on Home Credit and then hopped on a Coca-Cola truck and took off around the world. New Christmas commercials are made every year. But not every year they succeed. They're a pretty specific genre that either has to move or entertain, ideally both, and you have to accept that not every year is a holy day. Even so, the editors of Reflex managed to find some really good pieces. Watch with us!

An absolutely phenomenal prank from Sky TV. It looks like a classic Christmas ad about getting close to an elderly neighbour, but... it's a trailer for a new version of Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Bru-tal-ni! Not every brand takes the liberty of sending a kid to the woodshed in their commercials.

The Argos catalogue shopper points out that you'll be spending time with friends, relatives (and their children) and you should kit yourself out properly. Because it's going to be challenging. The swarming crowd of annoying neighbours will frighten you even more than the ghost of Christmas past in the aforementioned Dickens carol.

Stop-motion animation makes probably the cutest commercial on our list. It's a British fair trade National Trust Shop and there's nothing too unusual about it, it's just... kind of Christmassy sweet.

If you're a nerd like the author of this article, you'll appreciate the orc carol that promotes the new limited miniature from the world of Warhammer 40k. It's the green-skinned rocker Goff. And he's cool. So Games Workshop have released a carol full of gunfire, electric guitars and cockney accents, as is typical of their orcs.

A surprisingly good Christmas advert was put together by Heathrow Airport, which relied on a lesson from Love in Heaven about the airport being one of the places that is moved by emotion. And at Christmas, it's mostly positive emotions. Heartfelt goodbyes and touching reunions with family.

Perhaps the biggest commercial this Christmas is "Pils & Cookies," where Santa pours himself a Pepsi instead of the traditional milk. But not an empty glass, right into the milk. And Lindsay Lohan finishes it after him. We can't say it's the worst thing Lindsay's ever let loose, but still - brrr!
