The first of July is International Day of Jokes. Humour on the TV screen belongs not only to this one day, but it appears in the programme offer all year round. It is because one of the reasons, why viewers watch television, is that entertaining function and ability of helping them to get away from the worries of everyday life. Entertainment formats are therefore among the most popular on television screens.
As people generally have more free time in the summer, they also like to spend it in front of the TV screen. Every viewer in the Czech Republic over the age of four watched an average of almost 3 hours of TV a day last summer.
Positive, romantic and cult programmes are generally popular during the summer months.
On the main Prima station, these are traditionally the comedies Slunce, seno a pár facek or Slunce, seno, jahody; the Crocodile Dundee series or the Vinnetou and Old Shatterhand films. Among entertainment TV formats, the popular summer TV show on Prima is Máme rádi Česko (We Like the Czech Republic).
In general, viewers also watch smaller thematic channels more in summer, and of the smaller stations of the TV Prima group, Prima Love is the most popular in summer. In August last year, Prima Love achieved a record monthly share of 2.99%. For example, the film Rosamunde Pilcher: A Father’s Legacy was seen by 229,000 viewers on 7 July 2022.
On TV Nova, the audience in the target group of 15-54 years old, as during the year, watches mainly Czech drama, popular series and films (Jak vytrhnout velrybě stoličku/Malý pitaval z velkého města/Chalupáři). In the top shows for the wider target group 4+ there is even more emphasis on Czech productions and foreign titles are kept to a minimum.
Even commercials are not afraid of a joke. In ScreenVoice MAGAZINE, read which commercials are among the funniest thanks to their well-crafted punchlines.

TURNOVER OF THE AUDIOVISION ROSE LAST YEAR. HOWEVER, THE SUSPENSION OF INCENTIVES AND THE UNCERTAINTY SURROUNDING ČT POSE A THREAT
5. 7. 2026The Czech audiovisual sector returned to growth in 2025, with total turnover reaching CZK 11.3 billion, up 14.5% year on year, driven mainly by foreign productions rising from CZK 5.5 billion to more than CZK 6.6 billion after incentive reforms. Domestic film and TV production edged close to CZK 2 billion, while advertising production increased to CZK 2.7 billion, although APA says much of that gain reflects price inflation rather than stronger real margins. The suspension of new incentive applications due to exhausted funds is expected to weigh on 2026 and 2027 results, while proposed changes to Czech Television funding could cut annual investment in original film and TV production by CZK 800 million to CZK 1 billion. APA also points to stable private broadcaster investment and record regional support of more than CZK 109 million as positives, but says they cannot fully replace public service media, especially for documentaries, animation and children’s programming.

PRIMA’S MINISERIES WE ARE NOT A CULT IS MEANT TO BE FICTIONAL. THE CHANNEL IS ALSO CONSIDERING NEW EPISODES OF THE SERIES POLDA
29. 6. 2026Prima says its upcoming prima+ miniseries My nejsme sekta will be a fictional story inspired by Czech and international cases, not a reconstruction of any specific cult case, a positioning aimed at addressing the subject’s sensitivity. Jan Maxa said the project, led by writer-director Andrea Sedláčková and developed from publicly available sources, will examine the mechanics of cult influence and manipulation. The broadcaster is also in intensive talks about new episodes of Polda, while signaling a broader programming strategy that prioritizes episodic crime on Wednesdays and keeps premium prima+ titles off linear TV until much later.

THE STRANGER THINGS EFFECT: IS IT WORTH LENGTHENING THE PAUSES BETWEEN SEASONS?
28. 6. 2026Ampere says the average gap between TV seasons has increased from 10 months to 21 months over the past decade, turning longer waits into a deliberate attention-building tactic for major streaming titles. Series with breaks of more than 30 months delivered the highest viewer engagement in the month of a new season’s premiere, and Ampere reported that Stranger Things viewership rose by 300 per cent in the second half of 2025 ahead of its final season. For streaming businesses, the upside in anticipation comes with a retention risk: in Ampere’s Q1 2026 US survey, 54 per cent of respondents said they would likely cancel a subscription if they did not use it often enough.

THEMATIC FILM CHANNELS ARE ADJUSTING THEIR STRATEGY AND TAILORING THEIR CONTENT MORE TARGETEDLY
20. 6. 2026Films and TV series remain the dominant TV genre in the Czech Republic, accounting for 44% of viewing time among audiences 15+ and rising to 48% among viewers aged 15 to 34. Against a backdrop of 55 measured TV channels and intensifying competition from streaming services, broadcasters are sharpening channel profiles to serve specific audience segments more precisely. Atmedia says this clearer positioning helps both viewers navigate content and advertisers reach defined target groups, as seen in the differentiated strategies of AXN, AXN Black and AXN White and in the Filmbox rebrand and tighter genre focus across its portfolio.
