TV Nova has reached a significant milestone in sustainable filming. In 2024, 60 percent of its programs received the BAFTA albert international certification, which assesses the environmental impact of audiovisual production. Their share is set to increase this year.

Nova continues to implement its sustainable development strategy and is becoming a leader in eco-friendly filming in the Czech audiovisual environment. It is striving to set a new standard in the Czech media environment and show that responsible filming is not just the preserve of foreign platforms.

BAFTA albert certification has already been awarded to the long-running series Ulice and the popular reality show Extrémní proměny. New series are also in the pipeline, including Kriminálka Anděl and Odznak Vysočina, as well as Oneplay originals Monyová and Metoda Markovič: Straka. By the end of 2025, TV Nova aims to increase the share of certified formats to 70 percent.

"Sustainable filming is not just about recycling. In 2024, we focused on specific changes that have a real impact, such as switching from diesel generators to local electricity connections, reducing water consumption, and efficient transport planning," says Aneta Kožuszniková, ESG consultant at CME.

"This year, we are focusing more on suppliers – from catering to lighting technology. It's not just about change within production, but also about inspiring the entire supply chain," she adds.

BAFTA albert certification was established in the United Kingdom as an initiative of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and has become the European standard for measuring and reducing the carbon footprint of audiovisual production. Its aim is to support producers in the transition to sustainable practices and to create a unified framework for the ecological transformation of the film and television industry.

The CME Group, to which TV Nova belongs, aims to have all its productions certified according to the BAFTA albert standard by 2027. As part of this strategy, TV Nova is one of the pioneers of sustainable filming in Central Europe and is actively contributing to the achievement of this ambitious goal.

"Television is a powerful medium – not only because of what it broadcasts, but also because of how it is produced. And we believe that the way content is created should be as responsible as what we show our viewers. We are not at the beginning of green filming – we are at the point where we are starting to set the direction," says Hana de Goeij, Head of Sustainable Production and Responsible Content at CME.

TV Nova applies the principles of green filming not only in production, but also directly in the storylines of its programs. Environmental topics and sustainable lifestyles are gradually appearing on screen. In addition to reducing its carbon footprint and waste, the television station is also working to inspire its audience to be more responsible.

TV Nova was the first television group in the Czech Republic to begin systematically implementing green filming based on the BAFTA albert methodology in 2021. Today, it has its own network of so-called green captains, trained crew members who coordinate sustainable measures directly in the field.

These measures are part of the group's broader ESG strategy, called CME Cares, which combines environmental, social, and corporate principles of responsible business. And as the results show, the transition to sustainability does not have to be a compromise, but rather a driver for further innovation.
