Wednesday's Olympic hockey quarter-final between the Czech Republic and Canada in Milan was the most watched broadcast of this year's Games and also the fifth most watched broadcast in the history of ČT sport.

Wednesday's Olympic quarter-final hockey match between the Czech Republic and Canada in Milan was watched by a total of 2.299 million viewers over the age of four on ČT sport, with a 59.48 per cent audience share. The match was watched, at least for a while, by 3.887 million viewers. This was announced today by representatives of Czech Television. According to them, it was the most-watched broadcast of this year's games so far and also the fifth most-watched broadcast in the history of ČT sport. In a press release, the operator O2 reported record data transmission during the match. The Czech hockey team lost the quarter-final against Canada 3:4 in overtime.

"Czech Television's digital services also recorded extraordinary numbers: especially in the last third of the match, over 350,000 devices connected to the stream watched the broadcast on the ČT sport digital platform at one point," said ČT.

O2 recorded record data transfer on its network during the Czech Republic's match against Canada. "Instantaneous data traffic on the O2 network rose to 3.63 Tbit/s on Wednesday just before 7 p.m. At the same time, more than 1.1 million unique streams were running, which represents a new absolute network record in O2's history and an increase of 21 per cent compared to the maximum from 2024," said O2 spokeswoman Veronika Zachariášová.

The previous record from the 2024 World Hockey Championship final in Prague was surpassed for the first time on Friday, 13 February, shortly before 6 p.m. At that moment, according to the spokesperson, the combination of men's and women's hockey, along with other disciplines, pushed the previous record from 2024 to 3.19 Tbit/s with more than 1.088 million unique streams simultaneously.

"Major sporting events always put the network to the test. The fact that we broke the record twice in just a few days confirms not only the enormous interest of fans, but also the readiness of our infrastructure to handle extreme peaks," said Tomáš Křešťák, Director of Fixed Products and Innovation at O2.
