SOUTH PARK BECOMES THE MOST EXPENSIVE ANIMATED SERIES

Paramount Global has acquired exclusive global streaming rights to South Park for $300 million a year for five years.

The satirical show South Park has become the most expensive animated series of all time. Its creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, will receive an incredible $1.5 billion for the series to be broadcast exclusively on Paramount+ for five years. The information was reported by the Los Angeles Times, with the caveat that the details of the deal could not yet be officially confirmed.

However, according to available information, the production company Park County will produce ten episodes per year. With a price tag of $300 million per year, each episode will cost $30 million.

The series has been broadcast on HBO Max until now, even though the production company Park County is part of Paramount. The reason was that in 2019, Paramount did not yet have its own streaming platform ready and was just entering the online industry. Therefore, it sold the broadcasting license to its competitor HBO Max.

The return to Paramount+ was not easy. Paramount offered HBO Max's parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, a joint license, which would have allowed the main characters Kenny, Kyle, Stan, and Cartman to appear on Paramount+ and HBO Max simultaneously. However, these negotiations fell through, and Paramount was forced to go it alone.
