Tomáš Hruška originally applied for a different position at Nova, but in the end, creative producer Lenka Szántó and later head of development Michal Reitler gave him a chance as creative producer for drama series. "Lenka called me to say that Voyo (now Oneplay, author's note) was expanding and asked if I wanted to join the team and work on a project. So, I received an offer that I, as a screenwriter, dramaturge and someone who had worked in other positions in television for several years, had been longing for. I knew that television was looking for true crime material, so I cast my net and searched for some material myself. I discussed it with my brother (Jaroslav, author's note), with whom I have been writing since childhood and who is also a screenwriter," said Hruška.
The two Hruška brothers, together with producer Lukáš Mráček, gradually made their way to Jiří Markovič, the former head of the Prague homicide squad, who was still alive at the time. "We said to ourselves, damn it, how come no one has mined the police officers from the 1980s? We also saw some documentaries on YouTube about Mr Markovič and the murders of the 1980s. I still remember the initial experience when we saw an excerpt from an 80s camera showing Ladislav Hojer hugging Markovič during the reconstruction of the murder. We wondered how such a relationship could have developed. How come Hojer isn't in handcuffs, how come they built such a relationship," recalls Hruška.
What is interesting in retrospect is that similar material to that which Hruška and his team were "digging up" was offered to Nova by several other production companies at the same time. This means that Tomáš Hruška had to push his vision through with Reitler and the television management, and the signing of the agreement with Jiří Markovič and the sophistication of the script played a role, and he also had to defend the main members of his team. That means his brother Jaroslav, producer Lukáš Mráček and others.
